What are the basic requirements for getting a heat pump?

Most homes qualify. The key requirements are:

  • Outdoor space: The heat pump unit needs to be placed outside. It is typically around 1.1m wide x 0.45m deep and must be at least 1 metre from any door, vent, or openable window.
  • Indoor space for a cylinder: You'll need a minimum indoor space of 800mm wide x 800mm deep x 2,100mm tall for the hot water cylinder and associated pipework. We do have compact space-saving cylinders (500mm W x 500mm D x 870mm H) for tighter spaces, though these carry a small efficiency penalty.
  • Electrical supply:  Providing your home is up to modern electrical safety standards, then in the vast majority of cases your existing electrical supply is adequate
  • Radiators: Existing radiators don't usually need replacing, though your Heat Geek will assess this at the Design Consultation.

Insulation and double glazing help efficiency but are not a hard requirement. Our online estimate tool will quickly tell you whether your home qualifies.
